Consumer Credit Law is complex and still quite often misunderstood and the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and the regulations made under it have been subject to major change under the Consumer Credit Act 2006 and yet, further radical changes are due to take place in accordance with the requirements of the CCD.

On 7 April 2008 the Council of the European Union approved the Directive on Consumer Credit. The Directive, a maximum harmonisation measure, will require to be implemented by all Member States by June 2010.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is leading the implementation of the Directive into UK national law and the intention for the implementation of the CCD is to make an efficient and rapid transposition by finalising the implementing legislation as soon as possible.
